avocadosThe Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics named March as the official National Nutrition Month. This initiative serves to educate Americans about the importance of our dietary habits and how it impacts our health and overall quality of life. National Nutrition Month also highlights the importance of daily exercise and how along with eating well, it dramatically enhances both our physical and emotional health.

Having National Nutrition Month fall during a time of the year when most of us have abandoned our New Years resolutions is perfect.  For all of the proactive people who have managed to persevere and continue their resolutions into March, National Nutrition Month provides them with an extra boost of motivation. For the rest of us, National Nutrition Month serves as a perfect fresh start.

Here are 4 ways for you to celebrate National Nutrition Month:

  1. Eat Healthier Foods: In order to improve your diet, you don’t need to make any drastic changes. Just start with something simple, like cooking for yourself more or avoiding fast or frozen foods. Try to stick to the perimeter of your local grocery store instead of shopping in the aisles. Along the perimeter is where you will find everything you need, from fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and produce.
  2. Be Mindful of Your Dietary Habits: Simply eating healthier foods is just part of the equation. You need to make sure your eating habits are healthy. Make sure you eat breakfast every morning as it will give you the required energy you need to be productive at your school or place of employment. Also, try and refrain from eating late at night, as this makes it difficult to shed weight.
  3. Hydrate Frequently: Drinking plenty of water helps speed up your metabolism as nutritionists will typically recommend that you consume between 3 liters and 1 gallon of water every day. Staying well hydrated also helps alleviate muscle soreness, headaches, and cramps too.
  4. Exercise Daily: Working out everyday doesn’t mean that you need to drag yourself to the gym. If you don’t enjoy going to the gym, try activities that interest you more, like boxing, pick-up basketball, yoga or hiking. Exercise shouldn’t be an activity you dread, it should be something you look forward to doing.
